I had planned on writing about packing today but, long story short, I don’t have my luggage right now to photograph. It’s currently somewhere in between Nashville and Pensacola. Anyway, stay tuned for a post next week on the art of packing. Onto today’s post…

A few weeks ago, Jim and I went down to New Smyrna Beach to visit his parents who were escaping the brutal Michigan winter to snowbird. Yes, that’s a verb. While I am very partial to the Gulf side this time of year, New Smyrna is everything you’d hope for in a sleepy Atlantic Beach town.

Our trip was short, but I wanted to share a few little tidbits in case you’re heading in that direction. With it being winter, I was pleasantly surprised it wasn’t packed to the brim, like Marco Island (where my parents are) tends to be during season.

Sugar Mill Ruins

I love history but, to be honest, I can’t recall the story of the ruins but they were cool to see! Upon further investigation, the reason I don’t remember is because its history is largely based on speculation.. Interesting. Anyway, there are walking trails there and we walked Jim’s parents’ dogs.

Norwoods

It’s no secret that I enjoy good food. Norwoods not only was a super swanky and a totally nostalgic-looking to me, but the food was incredible. I had the stuffed chicken and wedge salad (which was way too much food, but that’s beside the point) and it was INSANELY DELICIOUS. It’s definitely more of a dressy vibe but it’s not overly-stuffy. A sundress for the ladies and a nice polo for the gents is sufficient for sure.

JB’s Fish Camp and Restaurant

I can’t believe I only took one photo of JB’s because I love it! It’s a totally beachy-vibe, Florida restaurant that supposedly has some of the best seafood around. I’ll be honest, I’m not a seafood person, BUT I did enjoy the hush puppies. A lot, in fact. They also have live music and it’s right on the water, which is lovely.

Blue Springs State Park

Not exactly in New Smyrna (it’s a bit of a drive but sooooo worth it) is Blue Springs Park which is where manatees go to hang out. There’s a fantastic walking trail there and the manatees are EVERYWHERE! I loved seeing so many, including some mamas with babies!

A Few Other Places to Note:

  • Flagler Avenue: Super cute downtown area almost completely devoid of any chain stores and restaurants.
  • Half Wall Brewery: fantastic beer and pretty good food. It’s a bit out of the way, though.
  • Beachside Tavern: Don’t let the outside fool you; this place is COOL. We didn’t eat there.. In fact, I don’t know if they even have food. But, it’s great for drinks and amazing live music. The environment is fantastic.

Alright, avid NSBers.. What are your favorites? It’s starting to look like this will be an annual trip so I’d love to know other New Smyrna Beach must-sees :).

Have a great weekend, everyone!!
