Spread the love

For as weird as it sounds, I really look forward to Lent starting every year and this year is no exception. I often find myself feeling like I need a recharge, and Lent is a great time to do it. All major religions have a period of time of intentional fasting and spiritual recharge and, even if it is more en vogue to be Jewish or Muslim these days, if you’re Christian, I’d encourage you to take Lent seriously this year. I’ve compiled a little list of ideas and would love if you have anything to add, to share it in the comments section.

Have a great Ash Wednesday! +:-)

Make a sacrifice for sacrifice’s sake. Lots of people “give things up” for Lent, which is great, but I feel as though a lot of people (myself included) often don’t have the most pure of intentions. For me, I often give things up because of weight loss or some other added benefit. So, I try to do things that don’t always have an ulterior motive. For example, parking in the last spot in a lot at the grocery store so I have to walk a little farther is a nice little thing that has worked well for me.

Do something extra. Whether it be to pray a little more, tip a little more at restaurants, or take someone else’s empty grocery cart back to the grocery cart corral for them, there are always opportunities to do a little something extra every day. Instead of asking yourself, “What’s the least I can do?, ask yourself, “What’s the most I can do?”

Be punctual. This is a BIG challenge for me. I walk in to OrangeTheory late almost every time, and I was recently reminded of a lecture I have my students when I was teaching high school about how being late is disrespectful of another’s time. Even though I’m pretty sure the OTF coaches could care less if I get there late, it’s still not right or respectful for me to do. So, for Lent, that is the one big thing I’m giving up and telling people about.. because, darnit, I’m doing it.

Learn to live in the moment. Savor this quiet season. Lent is not only a time of atonement for our sins (and Lord knows I have plenty), but also a time to be intentional about life, and really think through your priorities. Take the time to take the time.
