Happy Ash Wednesday!!  I hope everyone enjoyed lots of King Cake and jambalaya last night, and is ready to enter in to the solemnity of this season.

I read a lot.  As a Reading Specialist, I feel as though I should probably practice what I preach.. I’ll be honest, though, sitting down to read isn’t always something I have time for.  I keep a pretty full plate.  But, I am in the car a lot, so audiobooks are totally my jam.  It keeps me up to date on the latest novels, and I’m able to get though many more than I would if I was constrained to reading the old school way.  Here’s what I read (or listened to!) in February.

  1. Just Getting Started by Tony Bennett with Scott Simon:  I absolutely adored this book!  Anthony Bennetto (his baptismal name 🙂 is SUCH an interesting guy, and I loved this memoir because he spoke about so many of the amazing people in American history from his perspective.  Ever wonder what he thought of Judy Garland?  Look no further.  Each chapter is named for a person who Tony Bennett interacted with in his heyday.
  2. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley: If you have never read this, that is not OK.  Fine, I’m off my high horse…  I just read it for the first time and loved it.  It’s not what you would think, knowing about the Frankenstein monster only from Halloween pictures.
  3. The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware: Still reeling over this book. It’s a page turner, so say the very least.. I don’t want to give too many details, but I’ll say it’s soooo good.  Just don’t make any major plans while you’re reading this… It’ll keep you captivated!
  4. Uninvited by Lisa TerKeust: Ohmygosh..  Soooo good.  This book is perfect for any woman who’s questioning her self-worth which, let’s be honest, we all do sometimes.  Written in a non-cheesy tone that speaks the Truth of Christ, I can’t recommend this inspiring book enough.
  5. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi: I ugly cried, and was so inspired by this physician’s determination to live life to the fullest, no matter how difficult things are.
  6. Settle for More by Megyn Kelly:  Say what you want about her, I think Megyn is great..  Would you have EVER guessed that she had the flu when she was moderating the Republican debate in Cleveland last year?  Me either.  This, and so many amazing stories about her really cool life, job, and determination, can be found right here.

What are you reading these days?  Now that Lent is +:) officially here, I’ll probably veer more toward spiritual reading in March.  Who’s with me?

Starting in March, I want to try to diversify my reading in to the following groups.  These will (ideally) all have a Christian theme, to help me enter in to Lent more..  Stay tuned!

  • One book I should have read in high school (classic literature)
  • One book that inspires
  • One nonfiction book
  • One NYT best seller novel
