Spread the love

My pal, Christina recently moved back home to Arizona..  While I certainly miss her in many ways (devouring wine and dark chocolate; fast food without judgement; pretending to not be spoiled brats and thrifting clothes.; pretending to run ten milers)… I kind of miss her apartment more. I kid I kid..  But, my gosh, this little oasis was nothing short of fabulous…  And guess what?  To say that she did not at ALL break the bank on this baby is an understatement.  How, oh HOW doth one have this cute of an apartment.  I asked 🙂

What inspired your look?

My look was initially inspired by some ideas from blogs and Pinterest, but definitely eclectic.  I gravitate towards urban modern, shabby chic, patterns, and layers.  I also knew I wanted it to feel peaceful, open and inviting, so that impacted my colors in the main areas.  However, I had a low budget so it evolved based on what I found for great deals as well as what could be incorporated with what I already had. Since I couldn’t paint my apartment, I tried to bring in color through the furniture, rugs, etc.
How did you find the pieces?
I found most of my furniture pieces on sites like Craigslist and Offerup.  A few I found on the curb and and some came from friends.  A can of spray paint can go a long way in updating old furniture, frames, etc. into a new look.  My decor came from a combination of places – Ikea, Ross, HomeGoods, Target, H&M, Hobby Lobby, and Thrift stores
Any advice when scouring through Craigslist?
I’ve found there are a few good approaches when scouring through Craigslist, it just depends on what you need/want.
  • Regardless of what you’re looking for, my biggest advice for Craiglist is to search often! Good deals can go fast so check periodically.
  • One approach is to have something specific in mind and search for it often.  For example, a specific bookcase or dresser from Ikea or a couch you love from Pottery Barn.  If you have time and are patient, you can find great deals, especially in large cities.
  • Know what you’re willing to spend, how far you’ll travel to get it, etc and use the filters to narrow your search.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for a lower price, however, if it is already a great deal then be willing to pay what they ask.  If the seller is selling multiple things, ask for a discount if you buy a few things.
  • Generally, sellers get a number of inquiries that don’t work out.  If you find something you love or is a great deal, the sooner you can pick it up the better.  Sometimes I ask for a lower price if I can get it that day.  Often, serious sellers are ready to get rid of their stuff so if you seem serious, they may bump you above other people who have asked but haven’t committed.
  • For upholstered furniture, always ask if there have been pets, smoke, etc., especially if you have any allergies.
  • If the picture isn’t very clear, also ask for more photos or if you can stop by and see it in person.
  • The end of the month is another great time to find things because people are moving – sometimes you can even get things for free because people can’t take it all with them or are just happy to have someone haul it away.
