A kid in my neighborhood growing up had autism.  It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized his extremely-impressive recall of specific details of dog breeds was due in part to ASD, or Autism Spectrum Disorder.  The prevalence of ASD has rapidly increased in recent years, and the odds of having a student in the mainstream classroom with ASD is getting higher and higher.  Whether you’re a parent, educator, or someone who interacts with people on a regular basis, it is certainly worthwhile to become informed about this condition.  Autism Awareness not only increases funding for the causes and treatment, but also raises awareness…  What does this mean?  Yes, everyone is AWARE that Autism is a thing, but perhaps what they’re not aware of is how to be sensitive to certain things that those with ASD might say or do.  For example, some people with ASD might say things that can be perceived as rude.  What to do in this situation?  There’s plenty of information out there.  Also, Sesame Street recently released the character, Julia, who has ASD.  Part of the goal of Julia is to teach children how to interact with their peers who have ASD, and that it is possible to have friendships with them!  Another component of Autism Awareness is teaching parents the early detection signs.  If interventions are put in place early, symptoms often decrease with age.

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, I’m teaming up with Stella and Dot (no, I’m not a consultant) to raise money for this important cause!  I’ve always loved Stella and Dot jewelry.  It’s awesome quality, and so so soooo cute.  A student’s mama gave me a necklace years ago, and it still looks brand new.

All proceeds from these two colorful bracelets will be donated to the HollyRod Foundation, which provides compassionate care for kids and adults on the autism spectrum.  Here are the two that support the cause..  So cute, right??

Any time I consider donating to or partnering with a charity, I click around on their website to ensure that they are not partnering with any “charities” that I am morally opposed to.  I’m pleased to inform you that HollyRod is legit, and that their mission is wonderful!  Right now, they’re focusing on helping people with ASD get in to the workforce and live independent lives!  That is most certainly something I completely support!
Oops!  One more thing..  People Magazine did a story on this charity partnership!  Be sure to check it out here.
